The Catholic Church teaches that salvation from God's righteous judgment of hell is by both faith and works. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2068 it says “...that all men may attain salvation through faith, baptism and the observance of the Commandments". For the Roman Catholic, believing in God and keeping God’s Law are necessary for salvation. But, can you keep God’s laws and never sin? The Bible tells us that we are saved by faith without keeping the Law. Rom. 3:28 says, “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.” (See also Romans 4:5 and Galatians 2:21). Penance, The Mass, The Eucharist, and Praying to the Saints cannot remove your sin or keep you from hell. Only Jesus can do that. This is why Paul tells us that if we try to get salvation by keeping the law that we are cursed. Gal. 3:10, “For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.'” So, salvation must be by faith alone in the work of Christ alone (Romans 5:1). We must trust in Christ and his work, because our works are not good enough (Jer. 17:9). We must receive Christ (John 1:12) and be saved by faith as a free gift of God (Eph. 2:8-9). Pray to Jesus (John 14:14) and ask him alone to forgive you of all of your sins. Trust in him alone and his works. Finally, remember that it is only after becoming a real Christian that we can truly do good works, works that show we are saved. •
