By May of 1975, Steve Prefontaine held the American record for every race distance from 2,000 meters to 10K. Born with one leg shorter than the other, “Pre” (as he was known to the running world) was told he would never be fast enough or big enough to be a great runner. He proved the  world wrong. While he struggled in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he was the favorite to win Gold in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. But it was not to be. On June 1, 1975, while driving home from a party, Steve Prefontaine died in a single-car crash. He was 24-years-old. Pre came up against the one opponent he couldn’t beat—death. The same is true about you. One day you will die. When you die you will stand before God and give an account for your life. Because God is good, He will judge you according to His law. If you have broken God’s Law (lying, stealing, hate, lust, selfishness, blasphemy, etc.), He will find you guilty and punish your sin, with the sentence being eternity in hell. Your only hope is to turn from your sins, turn toward God and, by faith alone, receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ—fully God and fully man, yet without sin, voluntarily shed his innocent blood and died on the cross, taking upon Himself the punishment you rightly deserve for your sins against God. Three days later, He forever defeated sin and death when He rose from the grave. Receive forgiveness and eternal life. Repent and believe the gospel, today.
